WiFi is the cheapest you have smartphones and access to free WiFi.

Would it not be wiser to ask before, not when she is already there?

With a traveltalk sim (UK number) it would cost her just 3p/min to receive calls and 19p/min to call you (15p to send a text).
I guess there were even cheaper options available.

As Grumbler said, if you have smartphones and WiFi (or 3G/4G) access, then you have several options such as iMessage and Facetime (Apple iPhone specific), Skype, Viber, plus of course old fashioned e-mail, etc. Pre-arranging to call at a particular time can help when using free WiFi...

There are some roaming SIM options, however beware the call costs may be high for a UK mobile to call the roaming number as it will probably not be an ordinary UK mobile number. The Traveltalk SIM mentioned by Grumbler is an Isle of Man mobile number that will not be included in most "bundles", typically costing 46p per minute (3 One Plan and PAYG cost).

I didn't know that it was IOM number, but I checked now and see that indeed it is...
