I have a Salix Caprea Pendula (Kilmarnock Willow) which I've had for over 20 years now. It is on a standard - a couple of feet tall, similar to what you are saying.

It is grafted onto a rootstock, and I get exactly the same suckers as in your photo. You seem to have lots, I usually only get one or two at a time. I can't recall what the rootstock is, but I just chop them off if they start growing.

She is going to leave it now and keep it trimmed down, as she doesn't want to disturb all of the plants around it if she has it taken out.

    Rosebay Willowherb?

This looks very much like what I have in my garden. It is vigorous and upright and grows in large clumps. If you leave it, it will produce pretty pink flowers, it will self seed far and wide and also spread by underground rhizomes. Many people view it as a vigorous perennial weed.

Was it originally growing from a tree?/Tree stump? Like this one.

I'm not sure of the original source, as in my garden it seems to have originated beyond my boundary on what is currently uncultivated land. It looks very similar to your picture though!

I am going to leave the cuttings that I took and hopefully they go mad in pots. I can then move them around the garden to create a bit of height in the bare patches.

MIL is going to keep an eye on it and just carry on trimming for now.

    Thanks everyone for your replies.
