derby to west brompton help please??

Options
Hi, we are looking for the cheapest way to get from derby to west Brompton in London - I have been looking at trains but to be honest the prices are ranging from £300 odd to £24 and im not entirely sure I am searching correctly. I have never done split ticketing but have heard that you can get some great deals.
Or would we be cheaper driving to another town and getting the train from there?

We are a family of 4 with one child 5 yrs old and 1 child of 3 yrs old so when I am pricing tickets it says under 5s are free - but surely you still have to book a seat on the train?

Sorry to be so vague but I am hoping someone will be able to help me,
Thanks

Probably best asked on the Public Transport board.

Are you planning on going back anytime?
Might be worth mentioning that, as well as any dates and times of day.

Off the top of my head, maybe consider driving to Milton Keynes and get a train direct from there to West Brompton.

get a family and friends railcard too (you can use tesco clubcard vouchers to buy it) - you might make a saving with it just on one trip from Derby.

What dates are you looking at?

You have to book - and pay for - a ticket for a 3YO if you want him to have a seat. Otherwise he only gets a seat if the train is not full.

Do you need to get back to Derby again and if so on the same day? That will flavour the advice you get

Surely you want to buy a rail ticket to St Pancras and then get the tube (Victoria line to Victoria, District to West Brompton). Easier than messing around changing trains at Birmingham or whatever.

I just checked megabus/train for random dates 21st July Derby to London and returning on 23rd July and it for four passengers cost £16-28 each way depending on times so it could cost from £36 plus a 50p booking fee in total for the return journey for a family of four. 20-25 minute tube journey from there to West Brompton Piccadilly line to Earls cout and change to district line). Your children will travel free on the tube and probably cheapest to get an oyster card for each of the adults on arrival at St Pancras?Kings Cross (£5 refundable deposit and top up as you go, you can get the despot and any small amount left if you hand it into the ticket office at Kings Cross before you return or keep it for future London travel at another time).

Thanks very much for everyones help - the dates are roundabout the 12th of August, but Ive now had a look at I can get a cheap hotel room near that side of London for £50 - so im guessing that will be the cheapest option,

    Thanks again Moneysaving friends
