Free Eggs should be Free?

Hello my dears.

Whilst travelling through rural Devon last week, my other half and I saw a sign "Free Range Eggs 2 miles" and we diverted what seemed a lot further than 2 miles down a narrow country lane to get there.
The farmer at the property told us about some free range chickens he had as well, but here is the shocking thing! He wanted payment for both the free eggs and the chickens even though they were clearly advertised as "Free".
Where do I stand with the law on this? I obviously wasted fuel, time, and trouble circumnavigating the dangerous country lanes of rural Devonshire to get there only to be ripped off like this. I have always loved "range eggs" and have not really afforded them before. :D

You could have been pregnant; I dread to think what could have happened if you had slipped. Surely there should be some compensation here? Contact the financial hombomsomnomnudsun, at least they'll get charged £555000.

I have never heard of "Range eggs" before, are they the ones with "batteries not included"?
