Just to add the problems with categorisation and labels is that there are a lot of mental health conditions that we know so little about. No one is quite sure why Schizophrenia develops in some people and not others. The mostly widely used theory is that there is an increase of dopamine in the brain, most anti-psychotics reduce this which appears to work. We still don't know why the dopamine increases production. But you can have identical twins with the same upbringing and one will develop it and one won't. There is a hereditary factor, an environmental factor and questions about pre-birth complications but no one is really sure. It is mostly called a mental illness but it might not be, it could just as easily be a difference in brain development in the womb which is triggered by stress hormones later in life which leans towards a brain disorder. About all anyone knows is that it seems to take more than one negative event to develop, but whether it is an illness, who knows?

My own situation is no help as I had every possible contributing factor. Complications before birth, damaging environment growing up, lack of socialisation, my mother having it, autoimmune disorders and drug use. Judging by the possible causes that have been identified I was practically certain to develop it!

Aw, thank you, Pyxis! I hope that Mr Patrick would have been glad that he remained one of my best childhood memories!

Hi Team WaS just catching up a bit, hope all's well with everyone :D

Harry's feeling much better today :j He fell asleep & began snoring like a piece of machinery, when I said to wake up he denied sleeping & said he was just resting his eyes :rotfl:

I'm feeling quite excited as my invite to the Cancer Wellbeing fair arrived in the post this morning & it's being held at the local FC! My lovely Oncologist is going to be our guest speaker this year too!!!!!! Oh joy, anyone fancy a dance?
  • Hello Duke! So glad Harry is feeling better today! Exciting about the fair, too. I would go with you if I could, please tell us all about it!

I'm glad Harry is feeling better too.

My dad always said he was just resting his eyes even though the next door neighbours could hear him snoring.

Would it unsettle Harry if he were told we were thinking of him and wishing him well? I wouldn't want him to feel 'talking about in the ether' but on the other hand if he new those daft people he read were wishing him well brought him some comfort that might be nice?

Aaaaw thanks LIR that's so thoughtful. As for those daft people  No one's dafter than me hahahaha! I always tell Harry that his friends on here have asked after him as I hope that it may eventually encourage him to join us. Also I thought that it would boost his confidence.

I have the physical repercussions of going out on Thursday now :). The bras on m and s on line that were right had all sold out in my size. Fir said it was madness and said we'd look somewhere else and I explained I was confident of sizing there but not elsewhere ATM so he said lets give them a week or so to restock and try again.

Thank you. I will. Longest it could last will be a couple of weeks, and is unlikely to last anything like that long. :). I'll be pacing self for next few days though. Pretty certain I'll be more mobile by hospital appointment, New hospital not sure how much walking will be involved.

Try tetris for your intrusive thoughts, WaS:

Tetris: Forget Angry Birds, Tetris was the original addictive digital time-suck. Oxford University researchers claim that the colorful puzzle block game can serve as a "cognitive vaccine" against intrusive traumatic memories. In a series of experiments, researchers exposed non-clinical volunteers to graphic and traumatic film scenes. After the film, volunteers were assigned to either play Tetris, complete a Pub Quiz video game, or do nothing and asked to record any intrusive memories of the film images occurring to them throughout the week. Participants who played Tetris had significantly fewer intrusive memories than those who did not. The researchers propose that the visuospatial task of fitting Tetris blocks into incessantly growing piles uses up the brain's visual resources and interferes with its ability to encode visual trauma memories that are the building blocks of symptomatic re-experiencing and flashbacks. Before you dust off that old Nintendo Game Boy, note that the findings are preliminary, without independent replication yet, and based on healthy undergrad volunteers exposed to video clips instead of actual trauma survivors. Still, this innovative and intriguing line of research points to the possibility of simple and proactiveapproaches to preventing or reducing PTSD development.
