I have no TV licence, and wish to get one for the World Cup and then cancel again when it's over.

What is the cheapest way about this in terms of refund?

If you have any quarters (3, 6 or 9 months) left on your TV Licence and you will not watch or record TV again before the licence expires you can apply for a refund. Please make it clear in your application that you will still be residing at the same address.

I got a TV license for the last world cup - set it up to pay by direct debit starting the 1st day of the tournament. After a month I cancelled it - cost me 1 payment. Worked okay for me, but don't know if the rules have changed.

Find a 24 hour supermarket and spend 90 mins+ in their tv section debating which model you may buy before deciding to go back another time to decide....Repeat for full tournament.

Might be taking MSE too far though.
Hi there! We’ve had to remove your signature. It was so good we removed it because we cannot think of one so good as you had and need to protect others from seeing such a great signature.

I'm *sure* the staff won't mind if you take a deckchair and some cans with you and sit there in your pants in front of the big line of TVs! :rotfl:

It depends how many games you want to watch: for me England and the later Italy games -but my approach is to go down the pub/social club. This may get a little expensive in beer costs for the first 2 weeks as I won't be working and so I can allow myself slow mornings..

I've not even considered what I'll do if England get to the final, as it's played on a Sunday and I'd be working on the Monday. Somehow I think I'll worry about that later, should the need arise..:D

    Update:
This is confusing, before I was paying monthly and cancelled it back in March after the 6 nations, this is my first time.

I went on the site to pay for a new one just now, it said this address is already covered? I had to log on using my TV Licence number, which I found and it brought up saying it expires 30/09/2014. Can anyone clarify this? Is this why I had no letters since I cancelled? I didn't request a refund as I was paying monthly.

IF you had been paying monthly for more than 6 months you had paid for a full years licence. The monthly payment option means you pay for a full years licence in 6 months and then your payments halve and then you start paying for the next years licence - so after the first 6 months you start paying in advance for the following year and then at 13 months you start paying off the arrears on that year ( basically 6 months in credit then 6 months in debit.

I think those of us with a tv licence should get a couple of free weeks for the rubbish that is the world cup
Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.

Only if I can have a free TV licence for having to endure 52 weeks a year of soaps, cookery programs, reality shows etc etc.

I'm sure there are millions of people who enjoy the above shows but they're not for me. Just as I'm sure that for 4 weeks in every 208 you can survive with football being on 1 channel while enjoying the programming of the other 4 :D

Well, that was prescient of me! The way things are going I may not even need to worry about Italy going through!
