Correct me if i'm wrong, but aren't plastic windows the most hideous home improvement man has ever created? There should be some grade listing extending to all dwellings preventing them being fitted.

No the most hideous thing is on top of a conservatory roof when they put them stupid victrianesque plastic thing on with a spike at the end. It seems I am the only one who has noticed or is bothered by them but they just luck ridiculous.

I would agreed, but not far enough to give them most hideous status. They don't quite warrant that accolade.

Putting plastic windows in a period property is a crime against humanity. Or any property for that matter.

I think white plastic windows are one of the worse things out. I would always prefer to use wood but I guess it would be alot more expensive to you wooden windows hence most people going for UPVC !

I also thing wooden doors are more secure than some of the upvc ones. My friend was robbed and all they did to gain entry was take out the middle section of her UPVC door and walk in !

We had Penicuik doors and windows and they have been excellent, dont know if they operate outside Scotland though. But would recommend highly.
  • I have a dilemna - I saw a rep from Zenith Bowaters today total time of measuring up and discussion plus presentation 3.5 hours. End result, 24 windows, 1 french door and 3 other doors. Their book price 35K. Price went down further to 25K and then down again to 18K. It was the rep's expectation that I was going to sign on the dotted line - I did not.

A few weeks ago Anglian quoted me £7,800K for all the above. How can I know who to trust out of either company when I see a post by Cheekymole saying don't use Anglian and others have stated don't use Zenith.

Can anyone actually tell me who to use? I would like good quality long lasting windows that stay white for as long as possible, and where the PVC does not cover most of the glass. I would appreciate a response from anyone who has had an excellent service from a company in the SE London area from start to finish. I have a 4 bedroom Edwardian property 2 bath, study, lounge, dining and kitchen.

I am literally afraid to ask another company to quote, because it is as if their sales staff have rehearsed this sales spiel, so that if you throw anything else into the equasion they are caught off guard. I.e. "I am not signing tonight."

I look forward to hearing from you.

In response to this message. I tried the windowquoter site, but when I came to the measurements section, I thought it would be too much like hard work, so I cancelled. Lo and behold the next day the company phoned me on my mobile. Somehow they had managed to retain my information whilst I was typing. Rather shifty and crafty way of touting for business. I was a bit alarmed by this.

I hope you intend having them installed in warmer months too when you do get the correct quote.

hi, we have just ordered our windows from safestyle (please dont start telling mehorror stories i dotn want to know as wre have signed up now!)
we have paid 4,000 for 6windows and 2doors and 2 windows over the tops of the doors.
we have an old terraced house and large windows which are currently original wooden sashes, YES it is a crime to replce them with plastic i do agree and i have been posting for ages saying i want to keep mine, but we have decided to face facts, we have had them 'renovated' twice, which made a difference for a mth them they re back to being freezing again. im tired of being cold and listening to every noise outside so were getting them replaced.
the only thing im worried about is that they said they will have to remove all the window, frame, ledge etc and replace with upvc and piece of ply going around the edge of window, on inside, where we have lovely shaped wood at mo that matches skirting and door frames so i am quereing that with surveyor next week...does anyone know f they can leave this in? they said it for realigning it will have to come out..could we not put it back on?
we have chosent eh honey oak looking windows, still plastic yes but not bright white, actually same colour as ones we have at moment

since oredering them on tues (yes we signed on the night omg!!but hey i want it doing fast and we wer quoted £3,ooo to have them renovated, plus we would have needed 2doors on top of that) i have had every1 and his mum telling me ther opinion and slaggin off safestyle, but they are a big compnay and you get a guarantee, which i would trust more than some builder (which OH friends suggested)
it is individual choice but i have said to all our doubters, you dont have to live her, watching your breath blow accross th bedroom cos its freezing!! its our 4th winter here and at least we will be warm soon..even if our windows are plastic!!
