the OH and I are off to Nerja in two weeks, neither of us have been before so as first timers we are looking for suggestions on things to do.
i know it isnt near the main resorts on the costa del sol but we arent too sure just how far away we actually are from them. also, we've been told to go to gibraltar for the day and also barcelona as there is a train that runs direct from nerja, is this true??

You may find this site useful particularly the forum they have.http://www.nerjanow.com/
Also check out Travel Republic regarding airport transfers to Nerja, very good prices at times.0 -
It would be a heck of a long train journey to Barcelona from Nerja - and expensive. Have a look on Tripadviser on the Nerja forum as there is lots of information on there. have a lovely time0

The nearest of the big cities to visit is Granada at about forty minutes north of Nerja with the Alhambra or Malaga itself which is well worth a visit.
Best thing is to google Nerja tapas trails and enjoy the best thing about this part of Spain- free tapas! Don't be afraid to point at what you would like0 -
If you look at a map you will see Nerja is to the east of Malaga and the resorts of Torremolinos, Fuengerola, Marbella etc. are to the west of Malaga and Gibraltar is to the west of these resorts.
You can do Gibraltar as a day trip on the bus, you will see it advertised in the town.
The closest attraction to Nerja are the caves up in the hills at the back. You can use the service bus to get to them.
You can get a bus into Malaga and then get the local train down as far as Fuengerola.
As for Barcelona you can get a train from Malaga but imagine you were holidaying in Bournmouth and wanted to do a day trip to Manchester, that will give you an idea of what it would be like.If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.0 -

Manchester? More like going to Aberdeen for a day trip from Bournmouth!
If you wanted to do it in the day then your only option would be to fly but even then youre talking about a 90 minute flight. People forget how small the UK is compared to most other countries
Been to Nerja many times, its a fairly quiet little town slightly away from the normal tourist traps but still touristic/ expat. What made you want to book it in the first place?0 -
According to my mate, who goes to Nerja about 6 times a year, you will ove it ! He stays in the same apt each time and is forever there.
A trip to Granada is a must, see the Alhambra Palace. Stunning architecture and lovely people. Gib is a good treck away, at least an hour or 2 on the train. The trains there are great though.
You will definitely enjoy it.0 -

Rusty You can't get directly to Gibraltar on the train, a couple of ways to do it but first you have to get to Malaga. If you really want to go to Gibraltar and are not hiring a car then the coach trips are the best way.
I have to say in my opinion Nerja is one of those places you either love or hate and a Benidorm type of place it isn't. I hope the OP realises that.If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.0 -
nerja was recommend to us buy a friend who has been several times, and i'm glad it isnt a benidorm type of place.
we would like to go to gibralatar but it depends on distance and travelling time, and the same with the other main resorts in the area. i'm told there is the old spanish part and also a more modern and lively part.SPC 0370 -
We've holidayed there several times and it's a lovely little resort, a proper working town with a charm all of its own. You really don't need to go far if you like the vibe there.
We have visited Granada, but on an organized trip. I'd say Barcelona is way too far to go, and even Gibraltar is a very long day, we've never bothered.
The caves are wonderful, but realistically only half a day of your time (on the local bus), and you can also visit the nearby village of Frigiliana which is really picturesque.
Some of the tours of the 'perched villages' in the nearby mountains are interesting, but do savour the atmosphere of Nerja itself, especially in the evenings when simply strolling through the streets & the Balcon is the thing to do, enjoy the lovely local bars & retaurants, and of course the tapas. There is sometimes entertainment provided in the town square.
It's quite a chilled, laid back place, but we adore it.0
