How to change a forgotten mse forum password?

Lord_Gardener2

I hope someone can help. I've lost my password and alternative email for the forums on my normal account! I can't therefore reset and just get the auto response from webmaster pointing me to FAQ which don't have a solution to help me. Is there another route to resetting my password?
Thanks
Thanks

I'm sure if you think about it, you'll realise why.
If you remember your email address, (how many do you have???) you can request a new password here:

Thanks Atidi, however, your link will not help it will just point me to reset my password under Lord Gardener2. My first user name is Lord Gardener and I joined in 2004! I receive the weekly emails to my main email address but when trying to reset password for forum it requests the 'alternative' email address. This would have been set up many many moons ago!! Also, none of my old email addresses are or have been active for many years. NB I can't even remember if any other security info was asked for at the time. What I need is a link sent to my current email address to reset my forum password using my first user name. I don't know if a member of the mse team can help with this?0

Sorry, I should have clarified, you need to log out of this new user ID created before clicking the link above. You then need to use your email address for that other user id.
However if you have no access to that email address and have forgotten your password to the other user id, then you have lost access, sorry.
You would have been asked the same types of information for a previous user id as you you were asked when you created this latest one.
BTW, there doesn't appear to be any current user ID Lord Gardener for this site.
There is, however, a user ID Lord_Gardener if that was you and you can remember the password.
As I said, if you don't know the email address associated with the user ID, (and you will also need access to it as it will be where a new password will be sent) nor the password, no one will be able to help you, sorry.0 -
Yes, unless you have some way of proving that previous account was yours the MSE Admin can't give you access.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Yes, I'm Lord_Gardener. In the early days it seemed that you could leave a gap for user name. Re reset link, it just sends me a link to my Lord Gardener2 user name. I only have 1 email account which receives my weekly MSE news letter. I of course used this for setting up my Lord Gardener2 account! Knowing my user name and email address should be able to get me a reset link?0

To reset your password you need have access to the original email address you had registered with that username, because you need to enter that email address in the password recovery screen and it will send the password reset link to that email address.
If as you say you no longer have access to that email address, you will not be able to reset the password.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Thanks fermi, however, I must have changed email address at some stage to receive the weekly emails, which I have since they started. This surely would have updated in my account details? Can this be passed onto one of the MSE team. There must be some other information in my profile to prove who I am? At the moment I'm using the guessing route!! Of course I get an email to Lord_Gardener saying that someone is trying to log into my account and my IP number. Therefore my email is valid for both Lord_Gardener and Lord Gardener2! I'm in a loop not being able to contact the Mods direct. I hope someone can help0

The email registered for the weekly email and the one used for your forum account are not linked in any way. Changing one does not change the other.
So you say you are getting warning emails saying that you are trying to log into your old Lord_Gardener account?
That is odd, as usually the forum will not let you use the same email address for 2 usernames.
Precisely because you need a unique email account with each username to allow recovery of that account if you forget your password or username.
I'll see if I can alert the MSE techies to this, because if the same email is on both accounts they should be able to do something for you.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Thanks fermi, it may be because I've been on board for nearly 10 years! There has been a number of email changes over the years! I didn't even think that the main site and forum would use different emails. But I'm definitely receiving emails for both accounts to the same email address. I'm happy to try and answer any questions from the team to prove who I am. Thanks for your help.0

Well if both accounts have somehow managed to have the exact same email registered with it, then that on it's own pretty much proves they both belong to you.
I've emailed the team anyway. Might not be back to you before the end of the weekend on that but you never know.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB
