DMP & Mutual Support Thread - Part 10

  • Absolutely terrible night - less than 3 hours sleep! Not finance related but I feel dreadful. How on earth did I live like this for months on end before my DMP?!?

Quite a good reminder really, time dulls the memories somewhat but it's come back loud and clear that I felt like this every day, along with feeling sick and scared of the door knocking, the phone ringing or an email arriving. I was in freefall and no idea when I'd hit the ground.

As things stand I'm going to remind myself that I will NEVER go back to feeling like this because of money. I'm in control now and armed for the future.

If anyone wants me today I'll be the one asleep in the corner hugging a bucket of coffee ;)

    Hi everyone!

I've not been around much recently - limited access to internet at the moment, been missing you all

As some of you may know, I started my DMP with SC in June, but due to an underpayment of Council Tax, I've only just been able to make my first payment to them this month.

Just logged in to my online DMP and it felt so good to see the amounts that have been sent to my creditors :D I know its the start of a long road but hopefully can keep chipping away at them all and each month is a month closer to my DFD! :j

Sorry you didn't get the job Kate.

I've gone back to the sleepless nights.

I don't know if I can get back any PPI. I had it on most but I cancelled it.

If you didn't get the premiums back at the time give it a shot! All you have to lose is the price of a stamp. If you look at my previous posts I posted my success on the PPI reclaiming success thread. I had next to no information. Sent the letter mid August and I'm just waiting for the money. Do NOT under any circumstances use a claims firm, it's just handing them free money that you can make use of.

  • Hi all hope everyone is well fighting the good fight. Just updated my sig and eeking towards £10k paid off intotal. Although Hfx and BC have had their share of interest so have paid more in actual terms.

Hfx finally stopped just then BC started so considering braving it to self managed.

    Have a good day all.

Well done at getting started. Don't forget to update your online balance against your statements, you don't want any nasty surprises down the line! Good luck.

    Thanks Puzz!

Sorry I might be being stupid but what do I need to be updating? I thought the balances would update automatically?

The balance on the website will automatically change each month but these are what stepchange and payplan assume with frozen interest, your real balances are those on your monthly statements.. hopefully they will all match.. But creditors don't have to freeze interest although most do. Don't forget if you have any creditors who are not playing ball on the interest front there is a template letter on here to use, once you have settled into your dmp regular payments.

Oh and just to add it is quite normal for your original balance to go up during the set up period.. my total went up around 1%..

BooooooooB arclaycard is what they should be called, the more you pay %age wise to balance) the more risk of them putting up the interest. I think the threshold is about 0.75% so anything over that and they will continue to charge interest (even if it is at a reduced amount).

Good job on almost getting to £10k though :)

Kate, I hardly slept last night either... Not for a good reason either (nudge nudge, wink wink, no worra mean ;)) nor for my back it's sodding students going home blathered at all hours screaming, shouting, fighting and so on... (jeez, I'm such a grumpy old man LOL).

  • Hi everyone,

Just catching up with the thread - some great advice posted on here over the last few days :)

Kate - sorry you didn't get the job - their loss. Something bigger and better is waiting for you I'm sure :)

Just two queries if anyone can help:

We have a credit card debt with Barclaycard but have had no correspondence to say whether they have accepted the reduced payment from SC or not or whether they have frozen interest. Should we contact them or assume no news is good news!!

Secondly, how much is a good amount to have in an emergency fund? I remember Martin Lewis once syaing you should have at least 3 months' worth of your wages as an emergency fund (I think he said ideally it should be 6 months' worth!!). Don't think we could ever achieve that!!

Just wondering what people feel is a good amount??

    Take care all!
