    Debt-free and Proud!
:hello: Just be online to see if my SC statement was there and it was and now under the £16,000 mark. Woohoo!! Spreadsheets updated and big Nat West loan nearly paid off, so it's time to go it alone:eek:

I have some time off next week so going to phone everyone and hopefully get it all sorted. I've got a couple of small debts to pay off less than £500 so going to explore the f&f situation with them. It would be nice to start ticking off more debts.

  • Hi all - Newbie here!!

I have been reading the threads and there is some fab advice on here :)

We have received our paperwork from StepChange to set up the DMP. Currently transferring the direct debits to my new current account and my wages will go into the new account in September.

Tonight's job is to pull together all account numbers for StepChange.

Do we wait until the DMP has been agreed and we hear back from SC before we start cancelling loan/credit card direct debits?

Looking forward to your continued support as we start this scary journey!!

    Hi,

I am sure that someone more experienced will be along soon but it's best to cancel the direct debits ASAP and send a letter explaining that you are in talks with stepchange (quote your reference number) and send token payments until your Dmp is set up. Following advice on here I did 2 months token payments and instructed payplan to start the Dmp on the 1st September, this is so that you can save some money as an emergency fund for those unexpected emergencies. With no credit to fall back on this could be a life saver and makin token payments will encourage an early default which is also good :)

Hi :hello: all sounds very positive and well done for getting the ball rolling. You should start cancelling them all now and do let each of your creditors know that you're starting a DMP. Mosts (if not all) will put your account on hold for 30 days and you can send token (£1) payments to each of them to show good faith. Don't let your bank know though, not until you've got your new one up and running and arranged to have your salary paid in. Just to avoid the possibility of any offsetting (if you have debts such as an O/D, Loan with your bank). Also, don't rush in to setting up the DMP, give yourself a few months to build up an emergency fund... just keep sending token payments in the meantime.

Haven't been here for a while but have read through all the pages.

Two bits of good news finally got a default from Hellifax OD and most importantly my tumour turned out to be benign. That's two month of worry over. Feel elated x

So pleased to hear this, you must be so relieved :j

I finally got Halifax to default my loan account, they've transferred it to Westcot who agreed straightaway to freeze interest charges. So that's £40 more each month against the balance :D

    Hi there .......

Just checking in to say that day has finally come and i'm now debt free.
I would like to say without the information and support of this forum I would never thought this day would come. I'm totally grateful and thankful.

I have been in debt for most of my working life and im now 36 I don't owe a penny to anyone lol. I got myself in a right mess with credit cards and was on the road to where I thought I was going to lose my home and everything. It took me along time to pluck up the courage to call for help, I rang CCCS (stepchange) and they kindly lead me to a DMP. it was the best thing that I have ever done money wise, With the plan soon set up I was able to stop worrying about money and concentrate on living.

My plan was running smoothly with the odd review here and there. I shaved 3 years off my DFD by claiming back my PPI on credit cards which helped massively, I also got a promotion at work with a nice rise in salary so I put the extra onto my payment plan. I still cant believe I have managed to pay back it all back in 3 years.

To anyone who is going through debt and you think your alone , you are not......Pick up the phone speak to someone you will feel loads better!!!!

At the end of the day its only money!!!!!!!!:D

Once again thankyou for threads like this one as they are truly amazing..... hope you don't mind the long post I just had to get it off my chest lol....
