Doesn't it also cost to send a reply back?

I know you don't want to mke voice calls, but have you taken a look at 1899.com's rates? You can phone Italian mobiles for 15p per minute, plus whatever it costs for a standard UK call (or just the 15p per minute if you're on a landline). So on a PAYG, around 20p per minute typically. Given that a sent message plus a reply is going to cost at least 20p anyway (10p there, at least 10p back again) does this seem like a goer?

Amazingkitkat's solution is a great one for sending txts out to Italy, so could you use the two in conjunction with each other?

send this UK payt SIM card to your friend in overseas (oh well, i sent to my USA friend)
Good plan and certainly cheaper. Hadn't thought of that.

However the two snags are the other party will have to swap SIMs to reply (as jjames points out) it usually costs a tonne to send messages back when roaming. The other one is the other party can't receive (or make) calls when the UK SIM is in as that will also cost them a fortune (and also any Italian based callers) and effectively loses them the use of their phone for voice. Unless you have a fixed time of day for sending which unfortunately I can't do.

Yep already use the equivalent on the 18866 service but thanks.

bonzer....my friend in USA got 2 mobile phones, so no need to swap the SIM card!!!! one for her US SIM card and another one is UK SIM card (act like "pager"). and if u always send msg to your friend, ask your friend to buy second hand mobile phone and just for receive msg... i know in UK u can get the cheapest PAYT mobile for £30, and in the long term, it work out cheaper!!! it's better than u pay £15 per month!!!

if my friend in USA don't have spare mobile, i just buy one for her!!!!
    £30 mobile phone + (1st month) 150 sms for £3 = £33 for the first month....
    (2nd month) 150 sms = £3
    (3rd month) 150 sms = £3........

i'm sure it work out cheaper than your existing plan....u spent £15 per month
    (1st month) 150 sms = £15
    (2nd month) 150 sms = £15
    (3nd month) 150 sms = £15.....
