Replacing a locked, fault UPVC window handle

I have a broken UPVC windows handle which is in the locked position so that I can't unscrew on of the screws to replace the handle.

What can I do? :(

The handle locks at the 6 clock position and opens at the 9 clock position. There is a small button on the handle. Using a key, the button should pop out and then one can turn the handle to the opening position.

There are two handles on each site of the windows. Once they are all in the opening position, I can then push the window out to open it.

The problem is one of the handle is broken and is locked. I have tried wd40, but it doesn't help.

Got at quotation from a local locksmith company and they charge about £110 to do it. :(

When you say it's locked, you mean you don't have a key for it? Or it's broken in the locked position regardless?

Do you have a local window doctor? We have a guy who advertises locally that says he does all kinds of double glazing maintenance and I'm sure he mentions locks and handles.

sounds pricey - I had mine sorted (bar had snapped in the handle).by a window \lock guy for about £40 or so I think - all he did was remove the glazing pane so the frame could be bumped open (upvc quite flexible when glass removed), so could then get at the lock mechanism - remove the old one, fit a new handle\lock and put the glass back in..barely took 20 minutes..

look in yell\ local listings for other companies and see what they say..

pimento 'Window Doctor' suggestion sounds better..

    Hi,

    I have the key.

The window handle have a metal button which should pop out before I can move the handle to 9 o'clock opening position.

Now, the key turns, but mental button doesn't pop out so that I can't move the handle. :(

Got another quote for £45 - this locksmith is recommended by a colleague.

    tried. Didn't work.

Someone suggests to drill the lock - will it be too risky to do so?

Have you tried banging it to get it top pop out? Personally I'd just push it with brute force. All that can get busted is the mechanism in the handle itself which is going to be replaced anyway. Just my tuppence - don't sue me :-)

go with the £45 guy, even if you were to drill through the lock, you wouldn't be able to turn the mechanism as theres usually a bar that runs across from the handle to the lock parts (similar to multilock points on upvc doors), if that's snapped then youre not going to get through that with the glass still in place...

using too much force will likely crack the pane of glass - so the 'pro' approach will be cheaper and less hassle and replace the part that will need changing anyway,,,
