HP laptop -factory restore option didn't work

My HP laptop hd failed sfter 2 years - the make was Fujitsu (widely known for being crap hdds). I got charged £150 for a new hd with recovery discs.
Why did you do that?
Was never more than £50 for an HDD and if you have created Recovery Discs as instructed, you could have used those to reinstall.
Otherwise, you could have downloaded the OS and installed it yourself. Drivers and Apps from the HP Support website.
So you charged yourself £150 for not making recovery disc and for the convenience of not having to fit the HDD yourself.0 -
Do you know what type of windows 7 install you have? Is it "Starter" or another? Also do you have the key code?
If you have both of these then the instructions:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_install/how-to-install-windows-7-on-a-netbook-from-usb/ff8f440f-b956-4d82-8d8b-b42ff64115d9
Should suffice.
You can download official Microsoft Window 7 ISO images from:
http://msft.digitalrivercontent.net/win/X17-59463.iso - 32 bit
http://msft.digitalrivercontent.net/win/X17-59465.iso - 64 bit
These are the ultimate editions, use the tool in the first link to write the image to a USB stick, open the stick and delete the "ei.cfg" file and it'll work for any windows 7 version.

Because the HP tech dept told me their recovery discs (eventhough I DID MAKE MY OWN SET OF CDS) would link to the hd and therefore the bios.
Not everyone is as astute and tech-minded as you matey and I thought you were above sniping.
My point was HP were building using duff makes of hdd, and was this the case with the OP.0 -

It looks like it is you who is sniping.
My point is why did you not ask here for another opinion before splashing out £150.
No one suggested that you were expected to have the technical knowledge.0 -
The hd went and I live on my laptop. Had I bought a hd from ebay it may of may not have been duff and delivery may or may not have taken 3 days or more.
At least if anything went wrong and I bought from HP they would have to give support plus it was free next day delivery. So I was up and running after one day.
Had I come here for advice there may or may not have been flaffing around for a few days. And with the greatest respect you're not a 24/7 on-hand tech guy here are you?
So, for the expense I was up and running after only one day.
I hope this clears things up :0)0 -

Not really. You could have paid for next day delivery with eBuyer and unless I was on a flight somewhere, the recovery disc would have been in your Inbox within five minutes if I was online or at least the same day if I was not.
It's your money. I'm just telling you that you could have achieved the same result at a third of the price.0 -
Have you run chkdsk /r via Command Prompt?0

Or, to check the hard drive, tap F2 when you turn it onSquirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
