Dairy is slightly different same as rare breeds but for your bog standard raised for slaughter beef, lamb etc the cost of insurance or vets bills would not leave enough value in a carcass to make it worthwhile.

Then I do not see how making a comparison to a pet animal is relevant :)

Yes those breeds raised for meat will not work out for insurance as, as you say, the value is in their carcass.

For a pet the value is in the pet itself, the animal. Pet insurance is not expensive, I spend way more feeding my animals than I do insuring them.

I must say I never said insurance should be compulsory. Thats a personal choice. However, if someone can live with themselves putting an animal down because they didn't get insurance and couldn't afford to pay money (aka putting a healthy/cureable animal down) then thats for their own conscience, not mine.

    I agree.

Out of curiosity are routine treatments covered by insurance? For example, having a cat spade?

Spayed and neuters are not covered, as that is I guess maintenance for want of a better word.

Pregnancy related issues are also not covered unless I assume you have special breeders insurance. (I know it's not on basic policies, which is good)
