It seems to be based on eligibility for council tax and housing benefit, not sure where in my above post I said anything other than that?

If you cannot afford a pet, no you do not have the right to have one.

Ay way the dog was not taken to the PDSA (perhaps she does not live near one) so thats irrelevant what she may have been entitled to. She has to pay the vet she chose to use.

It's not irrelevant. The dog may need future treatment re the injury so perhaps the op could pass on info about the pdsa. This is a place for advice after all, not just somewhere to air your views.

Anyway, as Hintza said, people have the option of having an animal put to sleep, so insurance is hardly necessary.
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.

Having a pet put down because of finances should not be an option.

A pet should be put down only when it is suffering and there is nothing any one can do to help. Not because you can't afford treatment.

Meanwhile, in the real world, animals are systematically killed before their prime for human consumption. Are some animals more equal than others?

As long as the pet was well cared for and loved when with it's owner, I wouldn't deny them the comfort of a pet because they couldn't afford the extra for insurance.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on that issue.

However do not make assumptions that I agree with the mistreatment of any animal.

Too many of you look at this through townie eyes and not from a rural perspective.

When you have a lot of animals insurance is just not an option.

Using the PDSA if you do work will seriously damage your wealth

Took my cat in an emergency a few years ago, and the experience was unpleasant and the cost were ridiculous. A charity i will never support again.

My family comes from a long line of farmers and my best friend owns a dairy farm. All their livestock has been insured.

Dairy is slightly different same as rare breeds but for your bog standard raised for slaughter beef, lamb etc the cost of insurance or vets bills would not leave enough value in a carcass to make it worthwhile.
