If a reward is offered why not take it? I see no problem with that.
I have no problem with that, but earlier you said this:

we never got a single point for glass or plastics when recycling and only ever recycled cans as a result.
Which to me says you were only bothering to recycle cans because you were being paid to do so. The other items you could have recycled (glass/plastics) at the same time (presumably the facilities were at the same location), you didn't do specifically because you didn't get points as a reward.

I believe that we have a responsibility to recycle what we can, when we can, regardless of rewards. Sure I would collect the points for the cans (who wouldn't), but I also would have recycled my paper, card, glass, and plastic at the same time.

Since you brought up littering, imagine if the litter bins gave you cash for putting in paper but the rest of the rubbish people just threw on the floor as there was no reward for putting it in the bin.

Just trying to give you a glimpse of the way I see it. :)
  • How judgemental you are! You could not be more wrong!
I've been recycyling probably longer than you've been born, rewards or not.
I simply would like to know if there is an aluminium can recycling depot or point in South Hampshire that pays for large amounts collected. What's wrong in asking?
We do have a responsibility - but please stop trying to teach your grandma to suck eggs here - and stop suggesting scenarios that do not apply to the way I have recycled for years (responsibly I may add!)
I loathe litter, I loathe people who litter, I loathe people who do not recycle - WHICH I DO - whether or not a reward is offered.
Ask a simple question and get judged, ridiculous.

Do not see this the same way as you.

Some people will never recycle unless there is an incentive for it, others recyle regardless, but it is/was nice to get the club card points. This does not mean that those that use the Tesco facility for cans do not recycle everything else, just not at Tescos.
  • Thankyou POPPYOSCAR, you understood exactly what I've been trying to say.
It WAS nice to get the Clubcard points. We recycle everything else just the same.
We do collect large (in the 100's) quantities of aluminium cans, what's wrong with 'collecting points' or getting paid when we do? Recycling facilities get paid for the aluminium, so there is a small amount of money to be made.

You can choose to look at it that way, I was just commenting on what you wrote. If I have misunderstood then I apologise.

Now that is a little judgemental. You can tell my age by looking at a computer screen?

Nothing at all, but then I don't believe I said there was. I simply gave an assumed explanation as to why companies like Tesco might not be offering the service any more. As an example my local council has a curbside recycling collection (as do many others) which I use. Tesco and other supermarkets in this area removed some of their recycling facilities when this started as the demand for it floundered.

More assumptions about age? I prefer to be judged by actions rather than age. I don't believe advanced years somehow makes you better, you cant control when you were born after all.

I only responded to what you wrote, if I was incorrect I apologise.

Well I cant say I hold people who don't recycle in the same regard as people who litter, but I understand your point.

Clearly I misunderstood your initial post, but you have made the point clear.

I did say in my first post that I was sorry if it sounded preachy. No judgement was meant to be passed!

I just like to highlight the importance of recycling, rewarded or otherwise.

Fair enough. The world would be very boring (although possibly more peaceful) if we all saw things the same way. :)

I agree, and I would collect them too. I think you are misinterpreting my response to a (possible) misinterpretation of the initial post which seemed to imply that 'non can' items were not recycled because there was no point incentive for doing so. lljwag says that I have got that wrong (which they would know better than me), but after reading it again it still reads that way. Forums are often filled with miscommunication though. :D

I'm sure. I wouldn't even have mentioned it if I hadn't thought it was implied in the earlier post. :)

lljwagg, I think you will find it hard to find somebody willing to pay for your cans unless you have a few tons worth. Smaller recycling centres which may have offered such a service are making way for curbside collection which many feel is more convenient.

Maybe as a partway solution you could look at organisations which collect for charities?

You won't be getting direct monetary compensation, but then neither will a corporations board members either, and you'll have the added feel good bonus of helping someone in need. :)
  • anyone know of any Tesco recycling machines in Devon or Cornwall ?

    Welcome to MSE

If you were to read the rest of the foregoing thread, skipping over the bickering, you would see that Tesco are removing (have already removed?) all the automated recycling facilities which were in place. Presumably this includes Devon and Cornwall.
Are you for real? - Glass Half Empty??

Any update on this from anyone? Is there any prospect of the automated aluminium can recycling being reintroduced?
