I think many people don't know about this - a few Tesco stores had special can recycling bins in their car parks that paid you Tesco points for each can you lobbed in it.

There weren't many. They weren't well known. That is what the OP's asking about.... whether they can still get Tesco points added to their card for recycling their old cans at particular Tesco recycling bins - and, if so, which stores still have them.

    It sounds like: none now.

I very nearly posted here to say that the machine in Chesterfield was still there. But I looked yesterday and it's definitely gone. Pretty sure that's happened within last few weeks.

  • This was in July -

THE electronic recycling bin at Cirencester Tesco has been replaced with normal wheelie bins after customers said they preferred them to the modern system.

The electronic bin at the Kingsmeadow store, which allowed customers to recycle their items one by one, came to the end of its natural shelf life and Tesco made the decision to revert to the old system of wheelie bins.

Customer feedback showed that people preferred using the simple wheelie bins instead of the electronic type.

A Tesco spokesperson said: "We have replaced the automatic recycling facility at our Kings Meadow store with a wheelie bin system. Our customers appreciate the opportunity to help the environment whilst they shop and we are pleased to continue to offer recycling facilities at this store."
Deal with things as they are, not as they should be.
  • And I found this on kieranlane.com, hope it's ok to copy as we're all asking the same questions-

I have just spoken to Tesco Customer Services, and according to them the company managing/servicing the machines have gone into administration.

This means the machines are all being taken down, and probably sold off as assets of that company.

They assured me that the removal of the automated recycling centres IS temporary and that they will return once they have a new supplier. They hope to have it in place within a couple of weeks.

All Tesco Extra’s with recycling centres should have been fully informed of this a couple of weeks ago, but they will look into ensuring the information is out there for them to pass on.

I suggested they ensure something is posted both online, and near the old centres, to inform customers of the situation and they would look into that too.

Here's a LINK to the above. There's a picture of the set-up for those of us (like me) who have never seen it.

They were by a Norwegian company called TOMRA, got 1 Green clubcard point for every two aluminium cans.

No longer at the Wellington, Telford, Shropshire store, nor the Chetham Hill, Manchester store, called the Cheetham Hill store this morning and confirmed removed from all Tesco stores apparently. Disappointing.
  • Just spoken to head office and they have said they are removing all can recycling facilities once the machine breaks as it costs too much to repair. Also, people were cutting plastic bottles in half to try and get more points when recycling (cheating the system). This made no sense to me as we never got a single point for glass or plastics when recycling and only ever recycled cans as a result. Now the can machines are going/gone I have been looking for anywhere to recycle cans for cash in the South Hampshire area - nothing so far. Can anyone help?

Recycling is much more commonplace now, and people are seeing it as something that should 'just be done' rather than something that 'should be done for a reward only'.

I believe we have a responsibility to do it, and not just for a reward.

Sorry if that sounded preachy. :)
  • Tesco will be making a fortune from can recycling - as does anywhere else, or they wouldn't have offered points.
We have always recycled as vegetarians (no I don't wear leather and we label read everything we consume), we are not wealthy and any additional incentive is a bonus - as I think it is for everyone these days. If a reward is offered why not take it? I see no problem with that.
We need to educate people about correct recycling and also littering,
for me the 2 go hand in hand.
