New Telephone Line?

I'm in the process of sorting out a phone and broadband switch. I'm currently with Sky but want to move away from them as I'm planning to ditch the TV part in a few months time. Tried to get a deal with them but it was tied to the telly so no luck there.
Anyway, the reason I'm here is that I looked into Talk Talk and they're saying I will need a new phone line. Now they're showing this as free so it doesn't seem to be a huge problem but it is all fine with Sky at the mo and when I checked on Plusnet it all seemed fine too.
So I was curious and wondered if anyone had any ideas what this is all about? I got on their live chat to ask but as I didn't respond to the welcome in half a second they presumed I wasn't there and ended the chat, I've read the horror stories about their customer sevice, not a good start

I don't understand why you need a new phone line.0

Have you checked PlusNet?0

Yes, Plusnet checked and no problems there so may go with them.
To me, a new line is just asking for trouble in the short and long term!! - Just because I love this emoticon!0 -
Unless it's the LLU that means you need a new phone line. Do you have a BT line of some sort which is not unbundled?0

I've checked on sam knows and this is what I get.
- BT Wholesale ADSL
- BT Wholesale ADSL Max
- BT Wholesale WBC (21CN)
- AOL LLU
- O2 / Be LLU
- TalkTalk (CPW) LLU
- Sky Broadband / Easynet LLU
- Tiscali LLU
- Virgin Media (Cable)

It's because it's not possible to do an LLU to LLU transfer, at least certainly not via TT. You won't physically require a new line, the existing line will be reconnected.
Plusnet is a BT Wholesale provider, so the LLU to LLU issue does not arise. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
As macman says, it's to do with LLU. TalkTalk haven't got a process in place to request phone numbers to be 'ported' from Sky along with a phone line, as I found out when I made the same switch you are contemplating.
No problem with TalkTalk's broadband service though, been happily surfing, downloading and streaming for about a year (9 months on ADSL (normal broadband) and 3 months fibre broadband). I'd vouch for TalkTalk but Plusnet shouldn't cost that much more and granted their customer service is much better than TT's.0
