travel insurance - do I need to tell them I have CFS?

Hi, I'm travelling to Hong Kong to see my father with my 3 teenage kids. I'm planning to get travel insurance in case anything goes wrong.

I do have an existing condition - cfs, which is fairly severe. I'm registered disabled and very limited in what I can do, but it's not ever likely to cause a medical emergency - it never has done. If I lose all my tablets I'll have to get new ones, but that's about it!

Most cheap insurance websites don't seem to ask about it. Google travel insurance comparison site asks if you have a pre existing condition, and also whether you want to insure it. I don't know if this question is implied in accepting another policy that doesn't ask about it. I have a condition, but it's not necessary to insure it....

So can I just go for a cheapy policy that doesn't cover pre existing conditions?

Most insurers ask you to declare any exsisiting conditions and then if you want them insured they will offer you a price, if you dont want them insured the price should be less.

If you dont tell them it may void any insurance you take out if you need to claim

If you have any type of accident it can be put down to your illness,if you walk along the pavement and trip and break your leg the insurance company will put it down to your illness.
I would still take out decent insurance in the knowledge that any undisclosed illness will not be covered if they discover it.

CFS is quite a serious condition, which can affect you in many ways.

I know you have lived with it, for such a long time and know how to deal with it, but IMO, you would be a lot better off getting insurance which will cover it.

Imagine after the long flight you have a major flare up. This keeps on throughout your holiday. If it is so bad, they may not let you on the flight back. At least insurance will cover you for emergencies. The doctors over there may think it is something else and get you in hospital and ending up with huge bills at the end.
Try insure and go for a quote. We have loads of medical issues and they came out with a really good quote.

Better safe than sorry. They may play you about, if you don't notify them, for something other you try to calim on. Insurance co's are a law unto them selves.

Have you been on such a long flight with this condition?

Nope richardw, I haven't been on a plane at all since being ill.

rustyboy21, I can't imagine having a flare up that serious, but yes, better safe than sorry I guess.

antenna, are they really that difficult?

I phoned an insurer who had offered a cheap quote (insurance republic) and they said that as long as there are no claims reulting from my illness, I'd be fine, but I'll do a bit more shopping around first. Seems like it may well be rather stupid to do otherwise!

why take the risk? just go check out some comparison websites that allow you to enter pre-existing conditions and see what it throws up.
you're really not going to lose much by at least getting online quotes.
  • I'd contact Hiscox by phone, that way you can ask all of your questions to someone who actually knows the answers.

Finally, after much searching, I found one that wasn't much more than the cheapest quote that didn't cover my health condition (only about £40 extra!)
If anyone's interested it was with southdowns, through comparethemarket.com.

Thanks guys! I feel much happier now that I've stuck with it and gone for something that does cover my condition. The main reason for the insurance is if anything goes wrong with flights etc, but it's wise to cover my health problems too :)
