If she already has an LCD/LED TV with an HDMI connection, there is also the option to connect a laptop to the larger screen.
Same option with a PC tower, which could save the cost of a monitor.
You can pick up a new PC Tower unit for around £130 and install your choice of OS.
Inexpensive laptop with a full licence for Microsoft Office preinstalled here for £180.49 : MEDION® AKOYA® E6234 (MD 98409)(Microsoft Office Home & Student 2010)
Personally I like the idea of a wireless keyboard and a larger monitor, as it allows for more comfortable viewing and data entry.0 -
what type of tablet do you have, can you do word processing on it?
Define word processing. It's fine for letters etc, but, using it for large documents or writing a novel wouldn't be advised. Should your Mother want to write her life story, there is always the option of adding a keyboard dock....
My Uncle has no problem writing letters and printing them if needed. That said, since getting the tablet he's pretty much replaced letters with email.Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

It might actually be better to wait until she has been to the first class, and find out if a) they have any recommendations and
b) she can actually use a computer. (I know quite a few octogenarians, some take to computing like a duck to water, others don't get the metaphors or understand what to do, even after instruction. Not just 80+ either.)Eco Miser

Again, have to agree, it is not easy going from "how do I switch it on" to even controlling and clicking a mouse, left or right click ?Gardener’s pest is chef’s escargot0 -

becomes available again & buy one! :j

Windoze8, with enough space for all you could want . . . just note that Argos's description is ummm .... poor; mine was actually a X551MA with Celeron N2815.
On a par with cheap E4 AMD lappy's - but honestly, where could you buy a (reasonably new) laptop for £170? :cool:0 -
Have you considered a ChromeOS device? Asus do the Chromebox, it should be winging it's way to the UK soon. It'll will do everything your mother wants from it, and she will be able to connect it to any size screen of her choice (HDTV included). Or HP do a 14" laptop version.0

Here and it comes with a full licence for Microsoft Office 2010.
The Celeron N2815 is a Netbook processor. I would be bitterly disappointed after ordering an Intel Core i3-3217U to get a Celeron N2815.
I think I would sue Argos for the emotional distress.0
