silver surfer laptop

My 80+ year old mother wants to become a silver surfer and I would like some advice as to whether this laptop would be ideal for her or not. She has no experience whatsoever and will be starting classes shortly at a local venue but she would like to have the laptop before she starts the course.
Any help would be appreciated in making choice

Check dell business outlet as well.
That is more expensive when compare to home, but she will get 3 year warranty and probably better support.0 -
Impossible to answer unless you tell us what your mother wants to do with her laptop.
If just emailing and surfing the web, running office suites, then any modern laptop will do that with ease. Even a low powered processor (Celeron) like the one in your link will do that.
I'd question whether an 80 year old will be happy with the restrictions of a 15 inch screen and keyboard though. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
she wants to learn the basics email, surfing, a bit of word etc.
Is that Celeron processor quite slow??
Is your suggestion that we maybe get a desk top with a bigger screen and a separate keyboard to make it easier for her?0 -

If there is space, desktop & bigger screen for old eyes is the best option
I speak from age & experienceEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0 -
I wouldn't worry at all about the Celeron processor if she is only doing the basics that you mention - even so, a Celeron processor is perfectly adequate for also watching Youtube, movies, etc.
I agree with macman in regards to screen size. 17" would be more comfortable for an aged person and they might be able find things easier with help from the larger screen.0 -
You really need to try her out with different screen sizes and kb's before purchasing. Depends on her mobility and eyesight, she might be fine with 15 inch. Laptops are far less flexible, because you can't move the kb independently of the screen. And a 17 inch laptop will cost a couple of hundred more at least. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

These laptops are £299, so I don't think that's too bad price-wise.0

I think that this is to what you attempted to link.0 -
My Uncle (80's) is actually doing all your Mother wants on a tablet. It was much easier to get his head around than a laptop.Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

about this issue for a little while .....
WE are now considering a smart TV as the best route forward for the mother in law.
Dearer though unless it's time for a new TV as well.
For basic browsing and email there is less to learn .......
