However some cards did offer this, and not a long time ago:

Many credit cards offer a purchase protection system, meaning if you buy goods on the card and it is lost or stolen within a set time – usually about 90 days – you can get the money back from the credit card company.
Even if there are/were some exclusions, the OP's confusion/question is understandable and doesn't deserve all your unprovoked sarcasm.

Hey, I didn't say that the OP definitely would be covered (I wasn't going to trawl through the detailed T&Cs of all the cards when we'd already established that the card the OP used wasn't one that offered payment protection) but merely pointed out that it was a possibilty. Your original comment that

I think you've as much chance with your credit card provider as your local green grocer covering the loss.

suggested that you were unaware that any cards offered this sort of protection ,and I felt your remarks were unecessarily dismissive, especially to a newcomer.

Certain Amex cards [STRIKE] possibly [/STRIKE] don't (and existing card customers of Nationwide?)

    Ulsterbank specifically excludes it

    Nope. Amex excludes it too.

"Free purchase protection - guard your purchases against theft, loss or accidental damage for 100 days from the date of purchase if you pay with your Gold card. Purchases must be worth more than £50 and not covered by any other insurance and it is your responsibility to make sure that the policies are right for you."

We're talking about purchase protection, not extended warranties.

If you're going to be a smart Aleck, be correct.

    Still not covered...

    See page 4
    What is not covered:
    ...
Theft from motor vehicles unless at the time of the loss:

    – someone aged 16 or over was in the motor vehicle; or
    – the motor vehicle was securely locked; and

    – force and violence were used to get into the motor vehicle; and

    – the items stolen were in a locked luggage boot, luggage or glove compartment.

The most we will pay for theft from an unattended motor vehicle is £1,000.

Yes, you will keep finding things to back up your points for this one specific case.

But you began posting before you knew that the vehicle was unlocked, which only serves to highlight your naivete and your assumption that no credit card would offer this sort of protection under any circumstance.

I assume you will now say that you knew the vehicle was unlocked the whole time, and thus would be excluded from any and all purchase protection cover on the credit cards that do offer it. I did not know you were a mind-reader.

The bottom line was summed up by p00hsticks above. It was a sensible question to ask by the OP, and unfortunately does not apply in his case.
