Seriously, is it just better to get an extra job or work more hours? I understand some these sites work for some, but they don't seem to work for everyone, and the money to be made from them seems quite poor for the amount of time people put into it.

If there was actually a genuine way to make extra income, it would be great, but you seem to have to have some kind of skill or specific qualification, and if you don't have those, there isn't much use in signing up to those sites.

I could be wrong, but this is how it comes across from people who use those.

If you have any hobbies or interests (past or present) or just something that you would be willing to learn lots about and can string a sentence or 2 together, you can make money as an affiliate marketer.

You just add articles/reviews to a website, tell people where they can buy the great products/services that you recommend and earn commission. It's not rocket science. No special qualifications required and it needn't cost you a penny to get started.

I started in January 2014 with no previous experience of building websites. I now have 5 sites and am making a little money - not enough to retire to the Bahamas, but a nice extra sum to supplement the day job.

Affiliate marketing is known for it's poor income, most people aren't naive enough to click through such links as they just come across as spam/junk articles, so you need a website with very high traffic in order to get a decent click-through rate, and the amount of time spent writing appraisals can be better spent earning money through other means, not to mention the tediousness of it all.

Do you have any actual experience of affiliate marketing?

You are correct to say that it is hard work and there are no guarantees, but I think you are overstating the case. Many people make a very good living at it, but you need to create professional looking authority sites rather than the old spammy thin sites that you are referring to. Google has punished these worthless sites. I don't see much evidence of people being shy at clicking links - I get about 10-15% CTR from my visitors - obviously they don't all then go on to buy something. You need to personalise the site so that they can see that you are a real human being with something to contribute on the subject and not just some cheap and nasty "skim site".

If a person needs to earn a steady guaranteed extra income from day 1 then Affiliate Marketing is clearly not for them - it takes time to build a business and not everyone finds it easy to write engaging content.

As for tediousness, it depends on your personality I suppose. I would much rather try to make some real money writing about things that interest me than spend all day entering free comps and filling in online surveys etc. But, each to their own. Also, once you have written a post/review it can earn you passive income for years to come.
