I think your heading down the wrong path here. The Mondeo aux belt tensioner is notorious for wearing out prematurely and rumbling away, but it's false economy to just change the pulley on is own. Some Ford nutters change the crank pulley at the same time as the tensioner.

there's a difference between the idler pulley and the tensioner...

If it's actually the tensioner you mean then £70 sounds spot on. If it's the idler pulley then he's taking the p*ss.

Lift the bonnet up and start the engine. See if you can hear a squeal

Belt tensioner is a common issue. Upto you if you want it changed or not though.

Check the crank pulley at the same time thats also a common issue. Easier to do all 3 at the same time. Works out cheaper than replacing one at a time.

it is commonplace and sensible to replace all pulleys, idlers and tensioners when changing drive belts.

As with most things there are cheaper versions of parts, my sons MK3 Mondeo's power steering pulley packed in last year, a replacement was £54.00 trade and I fitted it Ford wanted £130.00:eek: so for £70.00 your garage may be fitting the genuine part, well worth doing as when they go your stuck were ever you are at the time.

I was always taught that a noise when dipping the clutch was a sign that the clutch thrust bearing was worn. The sound will get worse with time.

Having said that, it is always sensible to change the tensioner at the same time as the belt.

That will be the other side of the engine. DMF on its way out also?

All you need now are a turbo replacement and the injectors and you will have an almost new car.
