    Well, if you are asking him to accept payments in instalments you are, in effect, asking for an interest free loan. Effectively he will be lending you the outstanding amount until you pay off the further instalments.

    That said, I think cyclonebri1's suggestion of getting a couple of quotes and paying him 1/2 the lower would be reasonable.
