Thanks for all the help. I have e-mailed Bosch and am waiting for reply, but just thought I'd ask here in case anyone else had come across the same problem. No scraping is required as hob is absolutely smooth. The discolouration looks as if the black colouring has vanished and is replaced by grey/purple.

I had taken out John Lewis extended warranty, but it specifically excludes 'cosmetic damage' where the hob is still working as normal.

I'll continue to use hob cleaner and see if the discolouration gradually wears off.

I know the kind of staining you mean, it's the same as you get of you put glass in a bonfiere, it looks a bit like the surface of a black pearl. It's from the heat of the pan and although the glass is completely smooth it is on the surface and will fade black to the normal black glass over time, keep using the Hob Brite or Astonish on it to help it along.

For the avoidance of doubt, I didn't suggest a sharp knife, I suggested a sharp blade, like the one here.

I think most of us knew what you meant ;)

But I do agree with OP that a scraper won't get this type of stain off.

This has happened to us and all I can add is that it will fade gradually!

Thanks. I haven't seen glass in a bonfire, but I can imagine what you mean and it seems exactly like this stain. The surface is completely undamaged, just discoloured. The base of the pan was 'red hot', left scorch marks on the paving slab I laid it on outside (my good Stellar pan, so base was really thick).

I'm working with the hob cleaner and think the stain is fading, although very slightly, so I'll keep up applying the hob cleaner.

I was panicing as I thought the black colour had vanished from the glass.

Have heard nothing from e-mail to Bosch CS yet, so glad I asked on here.

Hob Brite! Know what you mean and this gets the marks off ours.

Had a phone call back from Bosch customer service. Only solution they could suggest was to leave a thick layer of hob cleaner on overnight.

    Will give this a try.
  • Hello,

I find myself in a similar situation! I was renting a place for a couple of months, and after moving out, the landlord was not all too pleased about significant discolouring of one of the hob rings. I had never used an induction hob before, so I did not realise the potential discolouring that can take place in these burners. These are cosmetic problems, but now I am left wondering if there is any way for me to get rid of these 'stains' without having to replace the whole hob, which is very expensive. I was thus wondering if you might have any updates or new advice!

A magic eraser sponge might work - they do seem to be able to clean off even the most stubborn and mysterious marks.

Possibly another use for WD40, thats what I've always used on my glass hobs.
