I spoke to the UK passport office in London and that was the recommendation they gave me (also with the spiel about getting my renewal in early if i knew I had travel coming up within the remaining few months of the passport, as i am due to travel within the last two months of my current one.)
I dont know if you realise, but your replies seem rather abrasive. Its an open forum, and although the OP may not need to renew immediately for their summer travels, it will be coming up.

The passport office can't tell you what is required. They just issue the passport. You should go with the recommendation of the embassy of the country you are travelling to0
