With sky for bb - wish it was still o2

  • I am also a 'transferee' from o2 to sky broadband.

I am not techie but i have had many problems with connection since moving...basically intermittent connection at all times of day.

I have called many times after the usual advice about moving the router, changing microfilters etc and its no better.

I had no problems with o2.....but should i really complain?...i dont know as i am on a free 12 months with sky but i feel like moving . Maybe because my service is free i am not a priority?
What to do?...anyway the customer service chappy said that he can do no more and is now escalating the issue. I wonder what happens next? An engineer visit?

Just out of interest my main phone socket appears to be very old and not a new one with removable faceplate. I am not saying this is the problem but will BT change it for a new one?...it has a letter T on the bottom right of the box. Was this an old BT logo?

The line test was ok according to sky, thats my input and sorry i cant give techie info, but they did say speed was slow on my line but they dont know why...

We had a power cut at 18.00 the other evening, it was off for around 1 hour.

I'm 3.1 km from the exchange, edge of town, residential area, so, considering it's probably the busiest time, I expected to reconnect at a pretty c@rp speed.

It reconnected at exactly the same speed, 6187kbps.

We had tremendous thunder/lightning in the early hours of this morning, but no power outages, I've just checked and it's changed again and I'm now getting,

Connection Speed Down 6919 kbps 50.5 db 4.8 db
    Up 639 kbps 30.7 db 8.5 db
This is the highest connection speed I've had since joining Sky.

    Additional question.
In 3 yrs with O2, I only ever saw 2 ip addresses, one for each router. Sky give me a new address every week, and this is causing problems accessing my web server.
Any recommendations for a free service to use, I've been considering the most basic offering from CloudFlare .
    Move along, nothing to see.

This is a DNS speed test program from google. There are several others around.

    https://code.google.com/p/namebench/

Most routers will allow you to override the ISP default DNS servers. Popular alternatives are OpenDNS and Google DNS. If your router doesn't support override then it has to be done on each device which is a bitof a pita.

I've tried the various DNS servers you list, over the weeks, and not noticed any difference in loading times.

Speed up again tonight, possible clue below?

I notice that the ip address has reverted to 93.96.77.* which is in the range that O2/Be used to dish out.
For weeks it's been one from Sky's range, similar to 46.64.214.*

    Downstream 7004 kbps 50.0 db 3.4 db
    Upstream 639 kbps 30.8 db 10.0 db

I reluctantly went to Sky from o2. The service has been terrible. Slow, dropping - in no way comparable to the excellent o2 system. it seems to me that if you do not take their TV package (I do not have a television) you are way down their list of priorities.

Fortunately that was 12 months ago and I have just initiated a move to Plusnet. I don't see how they can be any worse and hope will prove to be much better. At least they have UK call centres and the BB and phone package is cheaper than Sky.

Most of Sky's call centres are UK based.
