'Smart' TV - benefits ??

  • You made me rush to check my Amazon Instant video app still worked.. thank goodness it still does :)

I hardly ever use the 'smart' features (except for the DLNA stuff, which I think is great). But i've got a chromecast and an apple TV now.

I love the chromecast, and it is perfect for our needs (i.e. netflix, youtube and BBC iplayer). It's a real shame you can't get the other channel's catchup services with it.

Perhaps that'll change with time - hopefully.

After talking to Virgin - that appears to be the catch! I don't have Tivo - in order to benefit from a Hd & especially a 'smart' TV I need a Tivo installed.
Which means, £50.00 installed and about another £5.00 a month for the 'package'.

    Decisions, decisions!!

I have a Samsung smart tv ,i have only recently upgraded to Tivo, that was only because i phoned Virgin because of the increasing cost of my monthly bill. they agreed to install the Tivo for £3.56 and my package is approx £10 month cheaper now.
Before the Tivo i still got some HD channels (for free) but had to phone Virgin to get it activated

I got my Tivo (installed free) as part of a package renegotiation; before that I had a V+ box, which had quite a lot of HD channels included in my package.

Most smart TVs now seem to have Freeview HD built in, and you just need an internet connection to use the catch-up apps, so I'm not sure Virgin were giving you the correct information OP - after all, I used mine for a week with no Virgin TV service at all, just the broadband and Freeview connected.

I presume so.. but we already get plenty of use from it and to be honest; Sky+ gives you most of the channel's 'catchup' content anyway

(Goes away wondering why there's so much damn TV in my house)

Regarding Crackle, it would seem that Sony has pulled it from the UK.
This is bad news as I need my fix of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.

Hopefully the website is still getatable (if that is even a word).

PS Found a Google Plaly gift card that dd had given me, so ordered a Chromecast. Just a sucker for gadgets.
That gum you like is coming back in style.
  • Guess what - Google gives you another £5 in Play store vouchers when you buy your Chromecast

Eh? I have a Samsung Smart TV which uses Virgin broadband for its on-line content and 'catch-up' services like iPlayer, no Tivo installed here!
