I tell the PO the price and size I don't wait for them to tell me.

Yes that's what I do, also keep to the same postoffice / branch and they get to know you. If they are busy, I quite often drop off my letters, packages etc in the morning with the correct money and pick up Pop's on my next visit. Wouldn't be without my scales and gauge they have saved me quite a bit over the years.Thoughts:

We got sent 3 when it was 1st introduced. They came from Royal Mail with the post one day. Bright red card jobbies with 2 slots - letters - LLetters.0

You can only get cardboard ones and I'm not sure they are still available.
I prefer a plastic one, bought mine from ebay ages ago.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I use our kitchen scales and as someone else has said you can buy a plastic measure to test that it fits through (think they were £3) , but I have seen it suggested just to cut a slot in a cardboard box as a quick fix

Tip, if you post anything greater than a large letter then always use 2nd class and goes the same as 1st..... and cheaper....
When the mail arrives large letters and letters are separated from parcels. The guys sorting the parcels are under time constraints to sort so they will not try and work out the stamps on the package what they add up to and compare at a list, they simply look at the address and throw it in the appropriate bag.0 -
I do wonder if sometimes the PO counter staff get a commission from stamp sales. There is one lady at my local branch who I always try to avoid as she is hell bent on saying something is a parcel instead of a large letter. She says the item has to literally fall through the slot without touching the sides to be considered a letter! We Made-it-3 on 28/01/11 with birth of our gorgeous DD.0

I tell them this is to go as second class large letter please and they check then do as I tell them. Don't assume that they can judge the size by eye, do that same as any other shop and tell them what you want.0

Why are so many of you suggesting buying £1.17 in stamps at the counter instead of just letting them do it normally? Why not just say "its a large letter"? The stamp thing seems unnecessarily convoluted.0

I agree, i usually separate my packages - Do the parcels first and then say 'I think these should all be large letters now'. Never had any problems doing it this way0
