Has anyone come across this before? Car came up clear on a hpi check but i found out it was stolen and recovered previously. When I spoke to the hpi they said it isn't now shown on a check if there was no claim involved.

Has anyone else had experience of this? Would there be any impact on resale or vehicle value if it doesn't show up on hpi? Would a dealer hpi check show this even if a consumer one doesn't?

Google. Hpi then confirmed it on the phone but said it wasn't disclosed as part of check any more.

How do you google if a car has been stolen then recovered?

As in what do you type in the search box?

    I'm intrigued

    The reg number.

A forum post came up with a former owner saying it had been nicked and asking for help looking for it and then next day posted that the police had found it.

Hpi confirmed the dates but said it wasn't info they would disclose if I'd not raised it directly but it did show on.the screen visible to the agent.

If I'd not found the forum I'd never have known, I guess there are many owners unaware.

Ah, just a lucky punt then.

TBH if it is "stolen" and then found so no insurance claim was paid, it wouldn't be recorded as it wasn't processed.

I had a 'bike stolen once, had to send the keys & logbook to the insurer, then a week later the Police found it in an empty flat, and we had to push it home as I hadn't got any keys. Got the logbook & keys back from the insurer, no marks or anything, no loss of no claims as no claim was made.

(This was in The Olden Days, then I learnt and made it much more secure reducing the risk, nowadays they increase the premium as it is more likely to be stolen a second time)

Is this a change to the consumer check? The parameters for a stolen recovered car are so wide; from owner left keys in car and a muppet drove it down the road and it was found, to car stolen and found eventually with no details of what had happened to it in the intervening time, I wonder who would buy one if HPI are concealing the info? Was it perhaps misrecorded and that cars details were cloned?

It was recorded and HPI had a record of it on their system - it just isn't declared to a potential purchaser now unless you get lucky and find out.

As I understand it this is a change to the way they operate. The vehicle was actually stolen and recovered, not a different identity.

Your HPI Check will not provide any details if the vehicle has been stolen and recovered unless there are outstanding interests or the vehicle was subject to being written off as a total loss by the insurer.

As I said, if it is recovered before the total loss claim is paid out it wont be recorded.

If it was found next day with a broken steering lock it just gets fixed.
If it was burnt out it would have been a cat A and wouldn't be allowed back on the road.

It may not be disclosed but it is recorded. It seems to me that an HPI check is not giving the info that one may expect.

This vehicle was recovered, no claim paid out on it and is shown from police computer as stolen/recovered as confirmed by HPI by phone agreeing the dates I had found out. But the online HPI check does not give that info - only that it is not currently listed as stolen.
