Shopping at Gatwick Airport before Arrival

Hi

So I've been told that I can purchase items from the duty free before I get to the airport then collect when I get there is this true?

Basically, I want a peice of tech for my holiday and it would be cheaper to get it duty free, my concern is I get there and they don't have it in stock and then I don't have it for the holiday.
