Neighbour claiming parking space

We've just moved house to a new built estate, about 20 yards from our front door is a layby for 2/3 cars, the public footpath runs between it and the houses. One of the houses has put a sign on her front fence claiming the opposing parking space as "private parking".
How can i check if this legitimate or not? The previous owners of our house said they kick up a fuss if anyone dares to park there. We have a drive but just thinking if we have guests the only other place to park is up the kerb, if this space isn't actually owned by her then we'd like to use it. Will the council be able to confirm? Or is she just trying her luck because its the most convenient spot for her being opposite her front door?

Is the space part of the adopted road? If not, the only way you're going to find out for sure is either to ask the builder or get a copy of your neighbour's deeds?

I used to live on a street where one house put out cones. I parked there once (no where else free) and a girl came dashing out the house and said that she was terribly sorry but it was her parents parking space. I asked if they owned the road. She looked confused and said "no, but they put out those cones. They've lived in this house for 21 years!" As if that solved everything! I literally couldn't believe it and refused to move.

I expect it's just your neighbour trying it on. I don't think I'd bother paying £3 to check - I'd just park there if necessary and ask them to prove ownership if they kicked off.

of course not unless you wave it in front of them as proof of why they cannot claim it as "their" space

Nope, sounds like the neighbour is trying to nab the closest space to her property in the hope that no-one will argue with her.

I've had neighbours in the past do that, with no right whatsoever!

We had a drive for four cars yet he still knocked on my door at 10pm on a weeknight when I was alone to ask if I'd had someone park in his space.

    Life is really too short.

  • Neighbours can sometimes sound quite authoritative when they insist something is "theirs", even if you find (on researching it) that, far from being "theirs" its actually "yours". So its certainly well within the bounds of possibility that a neighbour is insisting something is "theirs", when actually its "communal".

    Don't ask me how I know:cool:

Thanks guys, i don't want to purposefully rattle her cage, i know its a pain when someone parks in 'your' spot...but if we need an extra space and its not hers to claim permanently then it doesn't seem fair to park up the kerb and penalise the pedestrians.
