I believe the ATM will be asking the question 'local currency or Sterling.' i will be going local.
That's true for purchases, but it's not the same for ATM withdrawals as I've already said.

Be vigilant when you do read the ATM message though, because it can catch out the unwary as they put additional information on the screen such as, and using 100 euros as an example, "if we do the conversion it will cost you £88.20". It may also quote a percentage charge (last one I used was 2% if I'd let them do it).

There is an official con known as 'Dynamic Currency Conversion' - where the cash machine could 'helpfully' offer to bill you in Sterling - avoid that as you'll get the providers exchange rate which is probably lower than Mastercard's official rate.

If you are withdrawing Euro, asked to be billed in Euro - not just at the cash machine but when spending with your card at a retailer.

    This? ^^ Or This>>

You won't be after you've seen the message the first time you use your card in an ATM.
