Ninth Anniversary Combo Breaker
Yesterday I had an mot at kwik fit it failed due to needing a new suspension arm. They quoted £135 supplied and fitted and then it would pass. Also had a nail in tyre which they repaired at the same time.

Went to collect the car and pay and they said they I'd need tracking done or wouldn't be safe to drive at a cost of £49.95.

I feel conned, should they not of told me that is need this when they rang to explain cost of repairs and did it really need doing? They said as they messed with suspension it would have to be done.

Thank you

An interesting question. Yes it should be done. Any garage knows that, and should have included it as part of the original quote, as it's a necessary part of the job. Bit like if they repaired the tyre, then tried to charge extra to put it back on the car before you drove away. So I would argue they should do it, free of charge now, as it's part of the original job the quoted for.

As already said, should be included in the price or quoted for as a possible additional cost before you agreed to the work, it is very unlikely the tracking would not need resetting after suspension work. Contact their head office and insist on a refund of that part of the bill as the branch failed to include it as a possible additional cost following their work, although I am not surprised by their approach.

Tracking done for £49? That's a bit steep. I'm pretty sure ATS do it for about £39 and there's probably places that do it for even less. Regardless they should have thrown it in for free in my opinion. It'd be like me asking them to change the oil and filter for me, them charging £50 then asking me to pay extra for the oil they use...

Too right. The local garage I trust (and who I only take the car to for things I can't do myself because I don't have a fully-equipped workshop with gear such as video/laser alignment) charges £25 for front wheel alignment, and £60 for four wheel alignment; and they do it right, too.

Got that far and guessed the rest. Please use a garage for MOT's next time.

It will be a fight but worth complaining.

"Not safe" is going a bit far, but if the tracking isn't done, then it's going to chew through front tyres. Yes, it does need to be done - and it should be an integral part of the job of replacing the arm.

After any suspension work teh tracking should be checked. But after changing a suspension arm i would expect that to be included in the costs.

I would have said that the tracking was fine prior to the work and if thats no longer the case i expect it to be corrected for free.

A complaint to the head office maybe in order here. Although if they send you vouchers give them to someone you dont like.

Tracking free? No. Wheel balancing yes, tracking no.

Redoing it after fitting a lower arm isn't necessary either. Not even sure how they'd tell this.

As above, it's a separate service so an additional cost. Lots of garages don't even have basic wheel alignment gear, so when they tell the customer to go and get the alignment checked after doing suspension work, do all of those customers do it?

You only have to look at the uneven wear on most of the tyres on second hand cars to see that most people don't give a damn about it.
