Today I changed my Nationwide select credit card PIN and when I put my credit card into my card reader I get a wrong card message.

Before I changed my PIN, when I logged into my online Nationwide account I got the choice of using my credit card or my debit card, now I just get the option to use my debit card.

I still see my credit card details on screen.

Is this normal sinced I changed my PIN or have I !!!!!!ed something up?

    I don't think it's you.

I have had 4 readers over time. 2 which came directly from Nationwide branches, over the counter, new , from a box!

What the card reader does is check your chip for the account number. Then when you put in the pin number it creates the code to enter on the website.

What I think has happened is that Nationwide has associated the pin to the card chip incorrectly at their end.

Or due to the fraud that is going around now days, they have separated your card details and you have to enter two different pin numbers for each card you use in the reader.

Call them and get it sorted out.

I've never had an option to log in using the card reader with my credit card, the options it gives me are for debit cards only. Been like that since I opened all accounts around 2 years ago.

As per Gels - I have only ever been able to use either of my debit cards, not my credit card.

Its a bit unclear from the wording of the OP. Do you get the wrong card message on the reader or on the website? If its on the reader then this obviously has nothing to do with your PIN change as the reader has no way of knowing about this, and no way of communicating with any systems back at Nationwide - its only function is to generate passcodes from the data on the mag stripe and whatever you type in.
  • Yup. Agree with Gels. Debit Cards only for as long as I've been with Nationwide.

I think drobe must be mistaken/confused. Like the others, Nationwide has never given me the option to login with my credit card, only with my debit card.

It's an application added to the chip on the card that generates the code in conjunction with the card reader.

If Nationwide haven't put this functionality within the chip, the card reader will see this and display 'wrong card'

I think this will confuse more people, I put my TSB debit card in the card reader and put my PIN in.

I got the message correct pin and a code to enter into my online banking.

However, TSB don't use card readers. They don't even have that option when you log on to the online banking.

Even my Capital One credit card card asks me to select function.

I have tried all my cards and the only card that gives wrong card is my Nationwide select card.

I think I will try it for a purchase, I only got it for spending while abroad and I am going on holiday in a couple of weeks.

Business accounts with TSB / Lloyds and BOS actually do use the card reader - theirs looks identical to Barclays but with a different logo

I would imagine that some bank's will add the functionality so they can use card readers in the future without sending out new cards.
