the thing that puzzles me most is why our Panasonic Combi Player, which is quite a few years old, has been no problem whatsoever - before and after the digital switch-over - and yet this new one is being a pain?

Most likely it has a digital (Freeview) tuner built in.

Otherwise, it may be working as I described in my last post ie via the scart cable(s) - but I very much doubt it.

If you have a spare Freeview box, that would be by far the easiest solution or even use your existing Panasonic combo to provide the TV signal (assuming is does have a digital tuner) routed into the Seal combo.
    Congratulations on your anniversary.

I think this is the unit we're talking about:
Very little on the net about it but I can't see anywhere amongst the logos that there's any kind of tuner built in. But if you've got the aerial connected through it there must me.
Have a go with Scrounger's suggestions anyway. I'll point out that you should use HDMI if possible but we'll leave that for another day. And happy anniversary!
