Ha ha I did know about the urban myth, there's loads in my road!!! Burning wouldn't be an option as my neighbour would have a hissy fit! Although he has a hissy fit most days as my flower beds are not trim, neat & in straight lines!! think weedkiller is the way forward & hubby with a spade!0

Maybe your neighbour is worried that if fewer people are 'advertising' his opportunities diminish?
I hate pampas too, its violent stuff. I cannot help wondering how many people would plant them for a bit of fun though, I had never heard the urban myth!0 -

It was probably before your time, it dates from the 60s/70s, though none of our friends in those days had a pampas grass.lostinrates wrote: »I cannot help wondering how many people would plant them for a bit of fun though, I had never heard the urban myth!

Wasn't pampas = 'swingers' live here mentioned in "Abigail's Party"? (Oh dear, now feel old...)0

I'd recommend glyphosate as weedkiller of choice to kill the pampas, but I'm not sure about a spade for your husband: you do need a good swing to be certain, and it is easy to miss. Burning for him would also be noisy, slow, and probably quite messy.
I'd stick to the poison route all round, then bung pampas and hubby on the compost heap, stick with what you know works. Given your user ID, I guess he - or the pampas grass signal - has done the job.
Let us know how you get on.
