The reason Tesco were the first people to really make home grocery delivery work on a large scale were that they picked from existing stores. Thus they did not need to invest in major new infrastructure.
When the internet first started expanding several outfits tried to make a go of home delivery but made the mistake of creating purpose built warehouses which meant that the operation was far too expensive to gain a critical mass of customers.
Tesco succeeded by 'piggy backing' the delivery service on the back of its extant stores.
I must admit that, until today, I had never heard of Tesco operating no customer warehouses (although, presumably a lot of the Tesco Direct stuff would be located at such facilities. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -
I thought they came form your local store, doesnt that make more sense
It may not be your local store, as not all stores have the facilities to do the deliveries, but it'll be from the closest one that does have the facilities.
Where i used to live, deliveries came from the large superstore in the next town, there were 3 stores that were actually closer, but they were all small stores without any delivery facilities0
