LG TV died after 17 months

I have just got back from holiday to find the LCD panel in my TV has leaked from the top right corner. There is no damage to the case so I can only guess that the screen is at fault. I have had it since Jan 2013 and bought it from Currys. The only thing that could have caused it was sliding the stand out to unplug it at the wall before going away, then the same to re-plug it in on return, but I didn't actually touch the screen.

My first point of call was my home insurance, I told the truth thinking that it would be covered on that since it is outside the 12 months standard warranty. But they told me since it sounds like a fault rather than accidental damage then I need to go to the manufacturer.

Am I out of luck?

I keep hearing about the sales of good act, 2 years warranty, EU laws etc. Has anyone had any luck following this? Who did you contact, the retailer or the manufacturer? What should I do? I absolutely love the TV and would like it fixing.

The model is a LG 47LM640T bought for £649 I think it was a Currys exclusive.

What do you mean by "my TV has leaked from the top right corner"?

The first thing you need to is find out exactly what the fault is and whether it's inherent to manufacture. Contact the local manufacturer's service centre to get the fault diagnosed, then if its indeed an inherent fault you can use this to get a remedy out of the seller.

The liquid crystals have leaked. If you touch it you can see it moving around. Lots of lines up and down from the damaged corner. Image is flickering and jumping around. Pretty much a standard knackered LCD panel.

I have only spoken to my home insurance company (barclays) after being scared off by them refusing to cover it, I thought I best ask on here for the best course of action.

sounds like accidental damage, go back to your home insurance and explain it like you did in this post.

The only trouble now is that they are saying it a fault, so if I ring back they will just say go back to the manufacturer.

What is the standard LG warranty for TVs in the UK?

Well go down the SOGA route and get a report and if they reject it as accidental damage then you surely can claim on your insurance and add the cost of the report.

They cannot diagnose it as faulty - they are not qualified. If you TELL them you damaged it they cant dispute it.

    A panel doesn't just break...

Yes they do - all sorts of things "just break" ! Suggest you read up on reliability engineering ............
