We have one of these fitted at the top of our stairs and it is very easy to open with one hand as long as you are an adult! You simply push a catch (very stiff) and lift the gate out of a lower notch.

I am very happy with it.

Me either. A friend has one and I struggle, even with two hands! I always assumed I was just being inept.
