I'd presume that's because they don't like the idea.jamesmorgan wrote: »The main concern seem to be about loss of identity/culture.
I find it sad that people seemingly fear that humanity coming together will actually change who they are or how they live their day to day lives in such a way or to such a degree.I believe that as far as the Star Trek universe is concerned, Earth is a member of the United Federation of Planets. But I'm not sure that it was ever explained precisely what the constitutional arrangements were in regard to the planet Earth. I'm therefore not convinced that there is a model there to be followed.
While the interplanetary agreements and various autonomies of the member planets are not covered in 'usable' detail, the concept of a United Earth can't be that bad can it?If you think of it as 'us' verses 'them', then it's probably your side that are the villains.0 -

By the way, Star Trek is just a story, like the Bible.0 -

I don't think that's necessarily the issue. You might propose that the UK should enter into a union with the Democratic Republic of the Congo on the basis that this would be an example of "humanity coming together". I'd say that you were crazier than a box of frogs for suggesting such a thing....While the interplanetary agreements and various autonomies of the member planets are not covered in 'usable' detail, the concept of a United Earth can't be that bad can it?
We already have a United Nations. What more do you want?0 -

ONLY financial. Neither does it take in how the financial "evidence" is spread. If only the wealthy benefit, then those not benefitting are not going to find comfort in the fact that some wealthy people are getting wealthier.
It's a bit like saying the average pay for a company has gone up £2k a year. But when looking at the figure you find only the two directors have had a pay rise. The 98 staff underneath them have got nothing.
The 98 staff are going to be jumping for joy that there has factually been an increase in wages in the company. Their opinion is going to be that they are WORSE OFF even though as a company the average pay makes them look better off.
Facts are not the be all and end all.
You know racists can try to intellectualize why they're are racists but they're still racists.......0 -

!!!!!!? They are the same. They are both racist statements.0 -

I like wide open spaces. It doesn't mean I want to live in solitary in the said wide open space.
We find communities of certain races in all areas of the country. People naturally gravitate to communities. Doesn't matter if you are black or white, Jew, Armish or Hillbilly or Travellers. Most people tend to gravitate to living in communities and it's an entirely natural thing. It doesn't mean you have an irrational hatred of anyone....which is what a racist is.
Racist is getting seriously overused, to the point where if you don't simply welcome everything happening, you become a racist.
Infact, some of those most pro-immigration have been noted to live in gated communities.
"I don't like living near foreigners" can sum up that paragraph and that is racist.0 -

Reading Ofsted reports for inner London, it is impossible to find one that is not mostly children of immigrants.
Actually, most people in London use the state schools because they are some of the best in the country and most parents really don't give a flying !!!! about the ethnic mix of schools. Londoners didn't vote UKIP.
And please why does anyone spend their time reading OFSTED reports for inner London? Life really is short you know and you are a long time dead. Have you ever thought about getting a life?0 -
Rather depressingly I think this attitude has always been there in the background. I think that UKIP has given the racists an acceptable outlet.
Let's face it, you couldn't vote BNP or NF as they were skinhead bovver boys. The leader of UKIP is one of us though. White, works hard, reasonable, drinks warm beer. He even gets on the BBC.

It is becoming more and more obvious that growth GDP cannot continue for ever there are serious resources issue with this and food water etc are all part of that.
So said Melthus in 1798 - how wrong was he?Malthus argued that population multiplies geometrically and food arithmetically; therefore, the population will eventually outstrip the food supply.
