in true MSE style I have to ask why people shell out any money at all to sit in an airport lounge? Time it right, just turn up, checkin, buy supplies airside, board.

I am actually facing this situation - and not by choice !

    Flight leaves Gatwick at 7,30am
So need to be at Gatwick at lastest = 5,30am

Train gets me to Gatwick at 12,30.....leaving me 5 hours to kill until check in.

Coach (takes nearly 6 hours !!) gets there at 2am...... leaving me 3.5 hrs to check in

Drive down myself for several hours, and pay £130 plus for car parking, plus petrol, plus stress.

Drive down and book hotel room & parking for £150 + - but have to get up at 4;ish to make sure we get to terminal on time.

I looked at the lounges - but they don't open until 4am.... could do with one which is 24hrs with comfortable seating/loungers ...

I know it is off the topic of cheap deals at Gatwick Lounges - but if anyone has any advice/suggestions ????

There are a number of reasons why people are at airports well before the time they need to be.

1/ People in transit may be there for a very long time.

2/ It's fine saying time it right getting there, but with traffic problems around some airports, this is easier said than done and it's better to be two hours too early rather than 5 minutes too late. There are also people who rely on public transport and they may have to turn up earlier than they would like.

3/ When departing from holiday destinations, it's not uncommom to have to check out of a hotel by 10am or 11am, and if your flight isn't until late afternoon or evening and you don't have transport, what are you meant to do if you have loads of baggage?

4/ You are normally told to allow a minimum of two hours to get through check in and security and whilst it does sometimes take this long (Heathrow in July & August for example), you might be lucky and manage it in only 20 or 30 minutes.

5/ It's often nice to go to a lounge if you find that your flight has been delayed for a fair while.

I'm sure that there are other reasons apart from these.

I have flown from Heathrow and Gatwick countless times and have never taken longer than about 40 minutes to get through security etc. Usually it takes less.

I have never stayed at a hotel where you cannot leave your bags after check out.

Lounge access is often time restricted.

Let's be honest - People not flying on business/first class tickets buy lounge access to add a little panache to their travels - Or to feel like 'ten bob millionaires' for a short while.

Sadly for us we're going from Heathrow where it's £35 per person and no fast-track security. So for 4 of us it would be £70 with this offer which isn't such a goo deal especially as you would have to pay £5 per person to guarantee a reserved place. Shame as I was looking for lounge access at Heathrow.

we book into the lounge because of the anxiety I get from the over stimulus of being in main airport (the lighting, too much noise, too many people, too much activity etc). I'd rather pay the extra for the lounge & not have the stress & be able to enjoy a nice holiday.

That's quite understandable although for many people airports, particularly good ones like Heathrow, represent the start of their holiday and are enjoyed accordingly.

I used airport lounges for years when I flew weekly on business - it was part of frequent flyer programme - and for much the same reasons as you.Travelling was very much a chore and anything to alleviate the stress was welcome.

These days I'm happy top chill out with a beer and a newspaper in the main concourse area to do some people-watching although if I was offered a private lounge with unlimited bubbly I'd jump at the chance. :D

Or just to feel a little less 'beaten up' when stuck at a transit airport for 4 hrs between 2 long economy flights - have a shower, snack and snooze
