How long after newly skimmed walls before painting?

How long do I need to wait before I can paint newly skimmed walls? They were skimmed last Saturday and they've all dried to a light pink colour now.

Thanks

You can paint them now. Remember the first coat should be a watered down white matt vinyl emulsion. Anything from 30 -50% water.

A mist coat or 1:80 PVA glue (cheapest option) or white emulsion paint / water

Diluted PVA IME is a crap option as it resists the further coating by emulsion paint leaving a crap final finish. Use a trade matt emulsion diluted 1:1 (50/50)with water - the plaster will soak it up like a sponge. It's called a "mist coat" and will provide a good base for your final finish, be it emulsion or wallpaper.

Just this weekend I've most coated around 40 sq metres of newly skimmed plaster using Wickes trade matt emulsion, diluted 1:1 with water, and it looks great. Plasterer specifically said to NOT use PVA to "seal" the new plaster for the very reason I've given above.

PVA onto fresh plaster is never a good idea (PVA is often used under plaster to stop it drying too quickly when laying over a porous surface - perhaps this is where the confusion comes from).

Just mix white matt emulsion 50/50 with water and apply a couple of coats to fully dried plaster before applying your final colour. This has never let me down in 10+ years.
