Another vote for the bait station, I've tried a few of the suggestions but this was the only thing that worked for me.

We put them near the 'busy area' in the house and one outside (slightly sheltered under a plant) near the front door, not had any ants for a couple of years now.

Can pick them up in home bargains type shops too I think.

It kills anything, ants, fleas, slugs, snails. It dehydrates them, it's non toxic too.

Would any of these suggestions work in the garden? We have lots of paving and sandy soil and keep getting nests appearing everywhere. I've tried the granules they're supposed to take back to the nest but they just run away from them, and the ant powder doesn't seem to get them all as they keep reappearing. I wouldn't mind a few, but this is far too many for one garden, and we keep finding odd ones who've found a way indoors. Plus, not only is it affecting our enjoyment of the garden but they keep eating all my veggies too

We don't have any children or pets, if that makes a difference.

If you an see the next then you can pour boiling water on it - it will get rid of a proportion of the ants and eggs.

You won't ever get rid completely.Regarding the veggies, are you sure that it is the ants which are eating these?

Putting baking soda as a barrier around the vegetables may help - it's non-toxic so you don't have to worry about it getting on your plants, and is poisonous to the ants. You would need to replenish it after rain.
