Has anyone any experience of free file viewer ,do is install toolbars which you neither want or need or any other extras
the reason why I am asking is that I am trying to recover an old programme called Trees which is for family history it was previously installed and saved on my pc ( in a old version of windows) and I need to open a DAT file to get to the info

Try opening the DAT file in notepad, see if it is a text file. You may be able to view the data well enough to extract the info you need. You can change the file extension to .txt
Try Notepad++ http://notepad-plus-plus.org/ for a more able text editor than notepad.0 -
