You should always assume that you have no right to return goods bought in a shop unless they are faulty or you have been informed that they can be returned under other specified circumstances.
All shop sales should be considered final unless otherwise stated.
Were you misled into believing you could get a refund?
Perhaps by a notice in the shop?
If, for example, there was a notice in the shop that said something like "bring goods back within 30 days for a refund", and it did not make it clear, or the seller did not make it clear by telling you, that your purchase was excluded, then that is not right.0 -

They did reply with apologies and resolved the issue for me.
And the cost of the paper, envelope and stamp you used must have been close to the value of the product you were complaining about. For me that would have been taking the notion of a 'point of principle' too far.0 -
In principle, the retailer should respect any returns policy which they advertise.
Their website says "Poundland offers (at the sole discretion of the store manager) an exchange or refund on unopened items returned within 7 days of purchase."
So they have a get-out-of-jail-free card there!
Unless there was anything in store which indicated otherwise, I'm afraid they don't have to do anything.
They would have to if damaged. The 'unopened items' tickles me a little as every Poundland I've been in has very few goods which are actually packaged. :rotfl:If you want proper advice, please consult a legal professional. I am not one! Thanks.0 -

The money is somewhat irrelevant.
My issue was simply about not being informed that the purchase being discounted, the item could not be returned.
I have no issue with the policy itself, since they can decide what they want about their business.
There have been shops other than Poundland where I have bought discounted goods and still could return them.
I am not claiming that they should have refunded but that I should have been informed about it when I bought the item.
You're posting on the wrong board then. I'd say 90% of the regular posters here are fully aware that there is no inherent right to return an unwanted item, and will happily supply the barrage of responses you have received to anyone who thinks otherwise. We know that you need to explicitly check a policy before thinking you can take something back.0 -

Whether it is discounted or not is irrelevant, you have no right to a refund of any item if it is not faulty just because you have changed your mind, if the shop is willing to give one it is entirely their decision.0 -

Sorry Cajef, that is not quite right.
If the shop has a stated returns policy that allows for such returns, then that policy forms part of the purchase contract.
In that case the buyer has every right to return the goods for a refund as long as that is within the agreed terms.0 -
Which is more or less what I stated:-
Hmm not exactly. Its not at their discretion as even though it may not be a statutory right, it is a contractual one. Your post was talking about giving a refund, not giving a returns policy.
So to state their own returns policy is at their discretion is slightly misleading at best. However you're right in the sense that they have control over the terms and conditions attached to their own returns policy - providing they are not unfair terms of course. You keep using that word. Pretty sure many of us have just made poor use of our time here :rotfl:0 -
