Phones4u

Ok where do I start.

Went in there for a nose at the weekend with the OH, and was accousted as soon as we walked in the door. They had a £100 cashback deal on various phone contracts which is what lured my other half in !

When we told the sales guy that we`d `think about it`.. he said

`well what if I give you £150 instead of £100. my OH agreed and so we sat down`.

He was offered a contract of £35 a month. It was a great deal with loads of minutes and texts with a free handset and obviously the cashback.

The credit check was put through and he passed, then out of no where the sales man started explaining the insurance, my OH said that he didn`t want it, but the sales guy said that it was part of the deal at only £9.99 (AN EXTRA £9.99 A MONTH),bringing the total to £45 a month. Then we asked him to confirm the deal back to us and he said 3000 texts instead of the 1000 he`d previously mentioned.. we questioned it.. he then said he had put friends and family onto the package at £5 a month, but we can cancel it in a couple of days time ..

I looked at my OH, he looked at me.

The sales bloke then said `oh it`s a way of tweaking the system`.. for you to get the extra texts.

So instead of the £35 deal.. it was now up to £50 a month !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It happenned in such a flash... he then said that the insurance and friends and family could be cancelled at anytime.

The point is that we did not want the extra things.. and felt that we were pushed into a corner.

The thought in my mind now, is that this guy was doing it for the extra commission, and I am now more angry than anything.!!

Is it worth complaining ??

Sounds like he was wanting a big sale but could you not have cancelled in the shop there and then when the amount kept increasing?

He was using sales techniques! Nobody likes them but nobody is forced to agree with them.

I'm sure if you complained they would not see the problem (same as me really).

When I go mystery shopping and do phone stores I expect them to try and beat every last penny out of me - it's just something that happens!

    yeah complain!
I got a contract from there a few months back, but I realised after I didn't want it. It was a sony ericsson W880 for £35 a month and they gave me £100 to help pay off my other contract. But i still owed another £150 to my contract and sould have to start paying for my other one. But they trap you as soon as you walk into the shop and they offer you so much , i got confused

So the next day i took it back to the shop and they tried to offer me various things, and i was still refusing and then they got the store manager to talk to me and he was offering me deals for another 45 minutes!! They eventually understood then called up head office to authorise it but because it was sunday they said they 'couldn't' do it.

So eventually the next day they sorted it.

But if u do decide to keep the phone, call up policy admin and you can get the insurance reduced to £6 a month.

The best thing to do is call head office cuz they will try and offer you all sorts.

But you signed the credit agreement surely?
How can you prove what he did or didnt say- at the end of the day thats what the agreement is for.
If you signed it and it tells you what your entitled to-even if he said different nothing you can do

I went for a deal like with with them - took the insurance to get the cash back, and cancelled it in the 14 days as per the initial disclosure document (just cancel the direct debit as its always separate)- mine is still £35 a month though - not the extra thing

I get mobile insurance with my bank account - but the £100 cashback offer was good

Yes there is a cooling off period, yes he knew what he was signing.. but the point is - THE WAY HE DID IT!!

I know there proper hard core sales people in Phones4u - when I threatened to leave, I got nearly £200 cash out of them.. but the point is.. he kept saying `thats part of the deal`.. when It obvisouly wasn`t .

It did get really confusing (I used to work for Orange, and we were NEVER trained to be like that!)

Fair enough the extras can be cancelled, but it`s just the way it was done !!

in my experience - phones4u are horrible to deal with in store.

a few months ago, my OH went into the shop by herself as they'd txt'd her saying she was due an upgrade (the usual stuff).. anyway - they plied her with the hard sell.. and as she's quite a timid person in the wrong settings she ended up with an awful brick of a phone on a new network (we are both on the same network and on the deals that lets you ring each other cheaply) a new number and a rubbish contract.

When she told me about it, I of course hit the roof and we agreed that she had been sold something that was about as useful as taking jade goody on mastermind.

We pops; into the store and straight away am set upon by one of the sales staff... I had to ask him to stop talking as I found out from my OH if this was the chap who had sold her the phone.. She confirmed it was so I said to him, that we'd like to cancel the contract... At first he totally blanked me and made my OH state that she wanted to cancel the contract. (fair enough as a one-off to confirm it- I wasn't bothered)

So we gets over to the desk, where he goes on and on, mainly at my OH (I know it was her contract, but he could see she was the weaker party in my opinion) to change her mind, giving her all sorts of deals etc.. none of which were any good)

He even got some other idiot on the phone to talk to her, AND the store manager..

It got the point where I totally lost my rag and began repeating over and over again "JUST......CANCEL.....IT"... at which point the store manager turned to my OH and asked if she wanted me to be to asked to leave the store!!!!

At this point I got up from my stool and went up to the store manager and said.."Look,, I've told your assistant, I've told the bloke on the phone, my OH has told the pair of them and now I'm telling you... JUST....CANCEL... IT"

The store manager then came over all sheepish to my surprise (I'm not a large or big built by any means) hurridly said to his assistant... "just cancel it and get them out"...

And that was that.. 45 mins... a shouting match at two people... and my OH proclaiming me her hero!!!..

So in short = Phone4u... :naughty:

It sounds like hard sell tactics you see everywhere nowadays, but nowhere near as bad as they do it in phones4u! I know because I've been there and know how much they push you to buy a contract! No point complaining about it really, you won't get anywhere. Watch the Apprentice, Dragon's Den and you will feel much better because it shows you how these people actually live their lives.
However you do have 14 days cooling off period to cancel everything, and it is generally true that you can cancel phone insurance whenever you like. It's ok to be rude to salesmen and tell them no. The best revenge in my opinion would be to cancel the whole contract+ insurance and never go near phones4u again. That way not only have they not made a single penny of commission out of you they've also wasted a lot of time selling you the contract in the first place :p
