i does vary based on each area, i work in a school and it confuses me.
You need to know your weekly hours, and also you will get paid for some holiday i get 5.4 weeks holiday pay so if you are contracted to 39 weeks add the holiday onto the calculation. it is a weird calculation they use, i have the formula somewhere i will dig it out and let you know.

Why would they advertise the salary in such a daft and complicated way?

Why not just state the actual salary for the actual term time that you would be working??

Because that is the way that salaries are shown in education!

It's not just in education but lots of public sector jobs too. There are salary grades for various types of post, used to be called A,P,T and C (Administrative, Professional, Technical and Clerical). So, for example a clerical assistant working in the council offices could be on exactly the same grade as one working in a school but the one working 'full time' in the offices gets the full salary for the post whereas the 'part-time' one in the school gets pro rata for the hours they work.
